1JM (Room 20) Newsletter

Welcome to 1JM

Dear 1JM Families,

We are very excited to welcome you to our classroom community and look forward to getting to know you. In this first newsletter we wish to provide you with some tips and reminders for a comfortable transition into the new school year.

Our classroom door opens at 8:25 each morning. We want you to share in your child’s school experience and recognize the importance of parents keeping informed on the work and activities of their children; therefore, we will have a visiting time for parents the first Friday of every month from 8:25-8:50.

Students should have a regular-sized backpack each day. If they need to carry other things for after school activities, we suggest using an extra tote bag to leave backpacks manageable for school related material. Please make sure your children are dressed appropriately for the seasons and for daily activities. They should also have a “secondary” set of clothing in school that corresponds to the appropriate season to include shirts, pants, under garments, socks, and shoes.

Please note that we have Library on days 2 and 7. We have Physical Education on days 1, 4, 6, and 7. Students must wear sneakers to school on those days and we encourage appropriate clothing for physical activities, such as shorts and pants under skirts or dresses.

1JM Homeroom Schedule

If you have not already done so, please fill out a Room 20 Dismissal Form with your child’s daily schedule. Written notes are required if a student has any change in his or her dismissal plans. We require written notes from both host and guest families for playdates. Please leave all notes in the black basket outside our room. Please make sure that your child brings a backpack every day. You should check “The Notes to Go Home” pocket chart on our door daily for school notes.

Birthday Parties

If you wish to celebrate a birthday in school, please let us know ahead of time so we may plan. Please send the same flavor or type of treat for all the children (no assortments, or half chocolate, half vanilla, for example). Please note the school policy that birthday celebrations are for the students only. Additionally, all birthday treats must be entirely nut-free.

Parent Volunteers Needed – The Scholastic Book Club offers a wonderful assortment of very reasonably priced books for children and a bonus point system allows us to order additional books for our classroom collection. We are looking for volunteers that will be responsible for filling out the order forms and sending them to the company. We also need parents to distribute the books to the children when they arrive from the Book Club.

Communication is key to a successful academic year. Please feel free to contact us either via email or by phone, if you have any questions or concerns. Our email addresses are and The school’s phone number is 212-979-5035.

On our class homepage (website) we will be post newsletters, information, pictures, and curriculum information.  We will notify you when we post new information.
