In first grade Art, taught by Madeleine Stern, students are exposed to new media and techniques including painting, different drawing approaches, collage, and printmaking. We will be taking a few imaginary trips beginning with a series of projects centered around outer space – designing spaceships using traced shapes and wax resist painting, creating fantasy planets, creating space helmets, and making a collagraph print exploring stars. 1st grade art focuses on exploring new skills and deepening techniques introduced in kindergarden. Process, personal reflection, and discovery are paramount.

In first grade Shop, taught by Isabel Dominguez, students will explore how to create three-dimensional sculptures by using various materials such as clay, cardboard and wood. The emphases of this shop will be teaching students how to securely connect materials together and how to design structures that can stand independently, while also creating works that are aesthetically pleasing to the young artist. First graders will continue practicing using tools such as hammers, cross cut saws, and they will be introduced to hand drills and screwdrivers.
