The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is a fantasy action movie, and the second of three movies in The Hobbit trilogy, the prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy. All of The Hobbit movies are based off of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit. The movie picks up right where the last movie ended, with Bilbo, Gandalf, and the 13 dwarves all hiding from the evil orc, Azog, and his army of orcs and wargs. Throughout the movie, they get closer to Erebor, the lost Dwarf Kingdom located under a great mountain. They meet elves, and escape, get help from a fisherman in a poor lake-town, and finally make it to the mountain, where Bilbo and the 13 dwarves meet Smaug. Gandalf goes on his own journey to Dol Guldur, where evil forces are growing stronger and making their plan of attack.
I loved this movie and thought that it was even better than the first. It was action-packed, funny, energetic, and filled with the amazing settings and fantasy creatures that we all know and love. My only complaint was that Gandalf’s story was a bit boring to watch right after a battle between Bilbo and Smaug, and you want to just fast-forward through it so you can get back to the fiery action-packed dragon scene. But, Gandalf’s story is very essential to linking The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, and you understand that while watching it.
This is a great movie and I, personally, loved it. I strongly suggest that all Lord of the Rings and Hobbit fans see this movie, and if you haven’t seen those movies, you definitely should.
