Student thoughts on No Mirror Day

As all of you know, today was No Mirror Day at school. The Pop Culture and Public Health elective students covered all of the mirrors in the school based on the theory that we would think of deeper things when we had no way to check our appearances. The day was a complete success, but as Navid and I found out, people had mixed feelings about it throughout the day.

In the beginning of the day, very few people were concerned about not having mirrors; they thought that it would be easy not looking at their reflections all day. However, we did find that a few people were not happy at all about the inability to check their appearances every few minutes as they believe they usually do.

By fourth, fifth, and sixth period, students were beginning to notice how often they looked in mirrors without even consciously realizing it. Nevertheless, they were not bothered too much by this and many of them started commending each other on deeper things than their choice of clothes. A few students unfortunately discovered an uncovered mirror and flocked around it.

At the end of the day, the students had gotten used to not seeing their appearances and accepted the fact. We got the impression that many believed the day had benefited them greatly. This was a good event and we think that we should maybe even do it again next year!
