For service day, I traveled with a group of 40 students to the Food Bank NYC headquarters in the Bronx. We spent the day repackaging dry food that would eventually be sent out to impoverished neighborhoods that struggle to get such things. It was an amazing experience as it made me more aware of the growing hunger crisis in New York. Moreover, it was interesting to learn that our group was able to package over 2,000 pounds of food and that it would help feed around 2,600 families. I was surprised at how well all of us came together and worked in such a smooth and coherent way. When we returned to school, we watched the documentary, A Place at the Table, that focused on the hunger problem nationwide. I thought it was a great closer to the day and left me feeling satisfied that I helped contribute to helping others.
