Spencer’s Time at Reading Partners

Although reading partners was not a one time service event, it was probably the most enjoyable programs I did during junior year. Every Tuesday a friend and I would travel down to a public school and would read to middle school students. Every once in a while we would crack a joke and seeing a smile on their faces would brighten up my day. We would also read picture books to them and help them learn new words and sounds. It was also very interesting seeing how our students developed throughout them as their reading skills/comprehension and vocabulary drastically improved. This was my first year of doing reading partners and I plan to continue next year.

Spencer’s Time at Lunar New Year Festival

This February I volunteered at the Golden Unicorn restaurant in Chinatown for Chinese Lunar New Year. A friend and I were at a station where we counted how many small objects such as beads into a cup within a minute. Whoever won got a fancy eraser. While there I also learned more about Chinese culture. Also the food there was excellent. This experience will be a remembered one.

Spencer’s Blog Post

In the February of this year I decided to attend the Chinese Lunar New Year Festival. This year is the year of the rooster. The festival was hosted at the Golden Unicorn restaurant in Chinatown. I first had to fold and organize the programs. What made the experience even better is that some of my friends attended as well. My job was to help a Korean Calligrapher. I had to insert the paper she wrote on in these black frames. Despite the fact she couldn’t speak English, she was very kind and reminded me of my own grandmother. As the festival progressed, the food was prepared and it was very delicious. Towards the end of the festival several workers at the restaurant were all under a Chinese dragon costume. There was loud drums and confetti was spread throughout the whole room.
