Where He Ought to Be: Black Lives Matter and Criminal Justice

Developed by Camille Fillion-Raff (2016)

Trayvon1

The project entitled “Where He Ought to Be,” tries to encapsulate the spirit of Trayvon Martin, the spirit that should have existed today but cannot due to the pre-existing racism in this country.  The painting shows an almost iconic version of Martin…as he would be now 21 or 22 years of age.  In the background of the painting are the wise words of Ta-Nehisi Coates from “Between the World and Me.”

Five Mualimm-Ak was sentenced to twelve years of prison after a physical fight broke out between him and three other men, one of which was a police officer. Five was known amongst his community as a man who spoke up for others. Some praised this quality of his while others condemned it. One day when Five was walking home, he was approached by three individuals who initiated a fight with Five. Together, they left Five with a broken jaw and several severed ribs. Five was then sent to prison. Once he was getting used to his daily routine as an “inmate,” he was found with an extra pencil in his cell; instead of having three pencils, he had four. Because of this “violation,” Five was sent to solitary confinement. Not only was Five’s added sentence of solitary confinement unjust, it was also an abuse of power on the prison’s part as Five had been given a similar…sentence as individuals who acted violently and threatened the lives of others within the prison.
