Part 1

The hounds held their noses to the ground, sniffing for the creature that had disrupted our world. Our perfect world. The creature that left a trail of darkness wherever it stepped. The creature that burned down everything until every world it passed through was nothing but a pile of ashes. The creature I had been sent to find. Alone.

I swept through the forest like the wind, my footprints leaving burning holes in the planes of reality. Where my feet had touched the ground there would soon be nothing. I cursed myself a thousand times over. I almost hoped the huntsman would kill me. That I would slow down so he would catch up and break through the bushes. Of course, my body couldn’t let me do that. As soon as the thought crossed my mind my pure black legs sped up. The sounds of dogs barking quickly faded away. The branches in front of me burned away to create a path and then I took on the form of an innocent little girl.

I ran after the hounds for hours. Both fortunately and unfortunately, as a human I couldn’t see the footprints the Prog left behind. I could easily trip in them though. As I fell for the umpteenth time, I thought I heard a girl crying. I followed the sound, expecting it to be a ruse of the Prog, but when I came to the clearing there was no one there but a small child. Tears ran down her pink face. She turned as if looking for something and saw me; her eyes widened in surprise. Something about her eyes seemed wrong, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. I knelt down and asked her what was wrong.

“My mommy,” she replied. “I can’t find my mommy!”
I flinched in surprise. Her voice sounded as if she could barely breathe. That’s when I realized what was wrong with her eyes. They were golden like a cat. The Prog could shape-shift.
