Math

Coins

This week we wrapped up our unit on coins. We spent time practicing sorting and counting pennies, nickels dimes and quarters. We set up stations for the kids to rotate between. One stations was a fun game where kids had to roll and a dice and put that amount of money on their board, the goal is to get to a dollar. Another station had kids playing coin dominoes, where they had to match cards with a picture of a coin to a card with that amount on it. Another station had the kids sort a pile of pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters.

Measurement

We started our unit on measurement by reading the kids a story called “Super Sand Castle Saturday” by Stuart J. Murphy. Then, we asked kids to measure items in our classroom using their hands and feet and writing down the measurements on a recording sheet.

Social Studies

Neighborhood project

Last week, as a group we decided the nine most important places that should be in a neighborhood. Kids got to chose the top three buildings that they wanted to build, and submitted those choices. This week, we assigned kids to the building they will be working on with a partner for our 1JK neighborhood. Kids were so excited to get their assigned building and partner! In partners, kids got a building planning packet that they had to fill out with the building name, information about this building, why this building is important, interview questions and a sketch of their building. Each partnership got a bin of books and articles related to their building that they had to read through to find out information on their building. Each partnership will also be conduction an interview with a person that works at the building they have been assigned to and so wrote down thoughtful questions to ask like “why do you think this place is an important part of a community.”

Building with Upper Schoolers

Students from Jesse Pasca’s upper school architecture class came to help the kids in 1JK begin building their structure out of cardboard materials. First, they drew a blueprint on a giant piece of graph paper, and then they “shopped” at the building supply store. Then, kids actually began putting their structure together, it was so much fun!

Reading

Comprehension Groups

Kids had been working in small groups to read  “The Long Way to a New Land” by Joan Sandin. After kids read each chapter, they answer questions based on the text as well as opinion questions.

Technology with Judith

Kids in 1JK are continuing to plan stories in pairs during our time with Judith. This week, we all went to Stuyvesant park together to take pictures for the setting of their puppet show

Grandparents and Special Friends Day

The kids in 1JK did an amazing job singing in the grandparents and special friends day concert. They were also so welcoming to their guests in the classroom! We had a wonderful time meeting all the family members and special friends of kids in 1JK.
