Assignment # 1: Modern Reflection

Your first reflection is on the notion of what is “Modern?”
  • Please take time to thing about your own lives and reflect about what components of your lives that you consider to be ‘modern.’
  • Consider activities, (tweeting, instantaneous videos, movies and music, connectivity..)
  • Consider your overall sense of self (your cookies track you, gps tracks you),
  • Consider the nature of communication (many modalities from snapchat, insta, whatsapp, etc)
  • Consider the ‘new’  (wearable technology) and the not quite here yet- self-driving cars etc…

There may also be ‘modern’ systems in part due to technology but perhaps you view things a little bit differently. What are some of the ways the modern shapes who you are? I would encourage you to discuss this with parents and grandparents to uncover some of the specific shifts they have noticed. Use ‘questions’ to stimulate your analysis. Ask yourself questions and follow the trail that questions can provide. For example: What was the nature of “trash or garbage” in 1800, 1850, 1900, 1950, 2000, present….? Please create new posts(as in DO NOT reply to this) for your own work it is CRUCIAL this is posted by ___________________ for class on _________________
